From Navngiv – Swipe & Match in Denmark to Namelie – Baby Name Finder for parents everywhere.
Namelie – Baby Name Finder began as the Danish app Navngiv – Swipe & Match. It was created by Emil Agervig Starup and Kristoff Styrbæk, two friends from Denmark who combined their different skills to make choosing a baby name a little simpler — and a little more enjoyable. After being used by more than 100,000 people in Denmark, the Danish app became the foundation for the English-language Namelie – Baby Name Finder.
It began with a name to choose.
When Kristoff and his partner were expecting their first child, they discovered just how difficult it could be to find a name they both loved. There were plenty of name lists, but no simple way to save favourites and see where their choices matched.
Kristoff, an engineer specialising in product development and innovation, shared the idea with his friend Emil, who works with software and app development. Together, they created Navngiv – Swipe & Match, initially built around Denmark’s official list of approved first names.
Could there be an easier way to discover the names you both love?
A Danish app became the foundation for something more.
Kristoff focused on the concept and user experience, while Emil handled the technical development. Their aim was not to turn choosing a name into a science, but to create a simple tool that lets parents explore names individually and discover the favourites they share. The experience, feedback and lessons from Navngiv – Swipe & Match later shaped Namelie – Baby Name Finder for parents beyond Denmark.
Navngiv – Swipe & Match was warmly received.
When Navngiv was launched in the Danish App Store, it received more attention than we had dared to hope for. The app was featured by several online publications and covered on television and radio. For a time, interest grew so quickly that the app briefly went offline while we worked to expand its server capacity.
Since its launch, many expectant parents have used Navngiv – Swipe & Match to help them find the right name for their child. We are both grateful and humbled by that. Their experiences and feedback continue to help us improve the app — most recently through a comprehensive update to its design and features.
What we are building next.
Today, Emil and Kristoff continue to develop Namelie – Baby Name Finder with the same simple idea at its heart: helping expectant parents discover names, save their favourites and see which names they both love.
The Danish version remains available as Navngiv – Swipe & Match, while Namelie – Baby Name Finder brings the experience to parents beyond Denmark.
Namelie – Baby Name Finder is published by NORDIOS ApS and continues to be developed by Emil and Kristoff alongside their other work.
